The Gozololo Centre for Needy Children has been an integral part of the Shootout since inception. Gozololo, which means “stay for a while” was established in 1997 by Durban businessman Terry Rosenberg and Miriam Cele, who has received many humanitarian achievements, including the Martin Luther King Peace Award. The strategy was to develop a centre where children up to the age of 14 from destitute families could come and be cared for. Gozololo operates out of four centres and has progressed from an organisation delivering care and support to 25 children in 1997 to providing a service to over 2600 children in 2010.
Funds raised from the event help provide for the clothing, food and educational needs of these children in the KwaMashu community of Kwazulu-Natal. Their needs are immense and we are proud to be able to make a difference to the lives of so many of our less privileged children.
“With the help of monies received from several SuperSport Shootouts and the very generous donations of many individuals, the Gozololo Centre for Needy Children continues to expand,” says Rosenberg. “We now cater for over 2600 children, incorporating those from the poorest communities in Kwazulu-Natal.”
Aside from the normal teaching activities and improved IT facilities that have been added, frequent and detailed HIV workshops are also open to the community. One offshoot of this new activity is the provision of regular stress and trauma counselling for people badly affected by crime and HIV.
